On June 17, 2024, Alberta's government introduced new restrictions on using personal communication devices (cell phones, smart watches, laptops, tablets, and earbuds/headsets) and access to social media in schools. In response to this Ministerial Order from the Alberta Government Department of Education, we have aligned our practices with this Order along with our Fort McMurray Catholic School Division Administrative Procedure 145.
It is essential that we regulate the use of personal communication devices that may disrupt instruction, invade personal privacy, and compromise academic integrity. In doing so, we will use school-provided technology as needed.
Students will keep their devices in their lockers/backpacks or at a predetermined location designated by the teacher in the classroom. If a student owns any digital devices as per AP 145, please see the following consequences for inappropriate technology use.
Please review this document in its entirety with your child. On the first day of school, students will be made aware of these expectations and the consequences of failing to adhere to them.
Contacting your child during school hours
If parents need to reach their child, please call the front office. The message will be relayed with priority and care.
Breakdown of Consequences for Inappropriate Technology Use
On the first day of classes, students will be informed of the Personal
Device guidelines and the consequences of not following the guidelines.
First Offense:
Students will be reminded of the Personal Device Guidelines.
Second Offense:
The teacher will take the student's personal mobile device, and an administrator will pick it up from the classroom. The administrator will then contact home.
Third Offense:
The teacher will take the student's personal mobile device, and an administrator will pick it up from the classroom and call home. The parent or guardian must come to pick up the device.
Fourth Offense:
The parent/guardian, student, and administrator meet to discuss the next steps. If a student continues to defy this guideline, it becomes an act of defiance. Noncompliance with this guideline may result in progressive disciplinary action, including suspension or expulsion.
